FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAN AFTERNOON OF MAGIC AND WIZARDRY in Honor of Pediatric Cancer Patients Raises nearly $400,000 to Battle Childhood Cancer
Funds Support Hope Street Kids Pediatric Research Efforts
New York City, August 31, 2004 — New York, New York - Hope Street Kids, a children's initiative of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation (CRPF), this afternoon hosted a special movie screening for children from the Ronald McDonald House of New York City and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Paula Zahn of Paula Zahn Now/CNN served as the Honorary Chairman and numerous members of Congress and their families were in attendance. The event was preceded by a family-friendly reception featuring Ronald McDonald.
Proceeds raised at the event will support the Hope Street Kids Pediatric Cancer Research Grants and Fellowship Program.
U.S. Representative Deborah Pryce (Ohio) and Randy Walker founded Hope Street Kids in memory of their nine-year-old daughter, Caroline Pryce Walker, who lost a valiant battle against neuroblastoma on September 4, 1999.
"The money raised from this afternoon's reception will help fulfill our purpose of providing hope to kids and families through pediatric cancer research," Congresswoman Pryce said. "We are thankful to our friends and colleagues for their participation and their continued support. With each step, we are moving toward our ultimate goal of a generation free of cancer."
Children's Cancer - a National Tragedy
Pediatric cancer is the number one killer in children ages 1 to 14 in the United States, and yet a small percentage of traditional government and private industry funding has been dedicated to new therapies for pediatric cancer. An estimated 12,400 children and young people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and 2,300 children will die from the disease, research into new treatment and cures for childhood cancers has been largely overlooked in this country.
Since its inception, Hope Street Kids has raised more than $3.9 million to support its battle to eliminate childhood cancer, and provided more than $2.8 million in grants and fellowships to researchers that support investigations of promising treatment and prevention approaches to pediatric cancer.
Randy Walker, Co-Founder, said, "We will help support the research efforts that must continue if we are to reduce the terrible toll that cancer takes on the lives of children and their families each year. We envision a world in which all kids live on Hope Street, never having to face the specter of cancer."
Event Participants included: Senators Sam Brownback, Larry Craig, Pete V. Domenici and Peter FitzGerald and Congressmen Bob Aderholt, Gresham Barrett, Joe Barton, Charles Bass, John Boozman, Max Burns, Stephen E.
