FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEU.S. Representative Deborah Pryce (R-OH) and the House Cancer Awareness Working Group held a hearing highlighting the challanges and insights of families touched by cancer.
"I hope to take the information, experiences and insights shared with me at this hearing to positively influence the dialogue on childhood cancer that we are creating here on Capitol Hill and across the nation," Pryce said.
Washington D.C., September 15, 2000 — "It is vital that we raise awareness about the incidence and devastation of childhood cancer in order to find better treatments and to someday soon find a cure.
"This hearing serves as a call to action for all of us, especially Members of Congress, to do what we can to aid individuals and families who are engaged in a hard-fought battle against childhood cancer," Pryce said.
Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease for children and adolescents. This year, an estimated 12,400 children will be diagnosed with cancer, and 2,300 will die from it. Each school day, 46 children, or two classrooms of kids, will be diagnosed with cancer. Of the children diagnosed, 70 percent will be alive and well five years later due to advances in research. Pryce stressed we cannot forget about the other 30 percent.
